Today’s Tip: Choosing Colors

If you think you’re challenged with choosing fabric colors for your quilts, let other people do it for you in one of several ways.

  • Take a look at the button jars for the Bodacious Button Bonanza Contest. Choose one that you enjoy and take the jar with you to the quilt shop. Draw your color choices from the already coordinated button jar!
  • Another way to choose colors if you have a little more confidence would be to purchase a box of crayons. Choose the 2-3 colors that you love the most, then match your fabrics to the crayon colors.
  • Before you invest in yards and yards of fabric for your quilt, make one easy block out of fat quarters. If you like the mix enough and think it will be a beautiful quilt, THEN invest in yardage.
  • One more method, and probably the easiest!?! Pick out a multi-colored print. Look closely at the selvage edge. There are dots with all the colors used in the printing process, so match your fabric choices to the color dots, then use a little of the multi-colored print in the quilt top, but also consider using it for your outside border! Easy peasy!!! (I call that one working from the outside in, kind of backwards, but it’s what I do most often).
